Three Women Recognized by Alameda County Board of Education

HAYWARD – In recognition of Women’s History Month, three community activists were honored with a Public Service Education Award (PESA) from the Alameda County Board of Education. The PESA celebrates people in the community who have made meaningful contributions to helping improve the quality of, and access to, education for all children.

The three people honored on March 13 were:

Lupita Figueiredo, a community activist, advocate and media personality. She has served as mistress of ceremonies for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Education is Everybody’s Business” Latino Education Summit, co-sponsored with the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), the Alameda County Board of Education (ACBE), and the Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Bettina Flores, who is Ethnic Days coordinator for the Oakland A’s and President and Scholarship fund-raising Chair on the Board of the Hispanic Community Affairs Council of Alameda County, which is an all volunteer organization that has awarded more than $ 1 million in scholarships to 1,300 Latino students since its inception in 1983.

Millie Gee Poon, a community activist and advocate for education in Castro Valley and Eden Area schools. Among her activities are field representative for two Alameda County Supervisors, organizer and supporter for many public school and community events, and provider of legal services for special populations.
