Trustee Eileen McDonald was elected President of the Alameda County Board of Education at the board’s annual re-organization meeting on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Trustee Ken Berrick was elected vice president.
McDonald, who has been a board member since 2004, represents Trustee area 6, which includes Newarkand the northern and western portion of Fremont.
“I want to congratulate Eileen and Ken for their election to President and Vice President of the Board of Education.” said Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools. “Eileen’s vision for healthier communities and for the physical well-being of our staff and students makes her a great leader in our community. Ken’s professionalism, expertise and advocacy for at-risk students will contribute to the continuity of strong leadership of the Board of Education. I look forward to working together as we continue our mission to ensure that “every child, in every school, every day” receives a quality education.”
President McDonald has taught in several programs in the Bay Area which include: Fremont Unified Regional Occupational Program (ROP), Ohlone for Kids, and Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas. Trustee McDonald was a member of the Newark Unified School District Board of Education from 1992-2003. Mrs. McDonald holds a B.A. from Cal State East Bay in Speech Communication and has pursued Master's level classes in Correctional Education, as well as a Master's of Governance and Master's of Boardmanship certification from the California School Board's Association. Mrs. McDonald is currently a substitute teacher in East Palo Alto.

Voted in as Vice-President of the Board--Ken Berrick, founder and CEO of Seneca Center, has served on the board since 2008 and represents Area 3 encompassing Oakland hills from Claremont south to Redwood Road in the northeast, to portions of Chinatown Central, San Antonio, Fruitvale and East Oakland in the south.
Mr. Berrick is a member of the California Child Welfare Council, as well as the President-elect and Education Committee member of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services. His advocacy work on behalf of children, youth and families includes serving on several policy planning groups at both the county and state levels.
