History/Social Science

The History-Social Science unit focuses on professional development and creating opportunities for teacher collaboration and advancement. Our major program, Words That Made America (WTMA), provides U.S. history teachers with many different opportunities to engage with eminent historians and with each other in the study of cutting-edge scholarship and effective classroom practice.

Other programs include our annual History Fair, a new civic education series, and programs investigating the integration of U.S. and World History. Watch for our upcoming effort piloting cutting-edge world history curriculum.

The ACAAHE launches its work in 2005 with a half-day workshop introducing teachers to content, practices and materials useful for developing activities and programs around Constitution Day.

History Day
Through a series of work-shops and direct support to students, participating teachers are provided with skills and resources to give their students a unique opportunity to study historical topics of burning interest and to build their research and thinking skills, while developing their own abilities to integrate research- and project-based teaching into their classrooms.

Words That Made America (WTMA 3)
The "words that made America" are found in the writings, speeches, poems, diaries, and even the scribblings of the American people as they struggled to define and shape the nation in which we live. Those words were expressed not only by political, economic, and cultural leaders but by ordinary people as they went about their everyday lives.
